New Patent for OES: Strain Monitoring for Part Quality Analysis

OES Inc., a London based technology company, received notification that they have been granted a new patent; Strain Monitoring for Part Quality Analysis - US Patent No. 7,216,519. This patent supports the technology that OES developed for process variation monitoring systems in industrial force forming applications.

"A significant part of our business derives from our process monitoring systems deployed in auto parts manufacturing applications." says Michael Reeve, VP of Market Development at OES Inc. "These industrial applications include crimp monitoring in wire harness manufacturing, tube end forming and hose crimping in fluid handling assemblies and bend monitoring of exhaust pipe production, as well as an expanding variety of force forming processes. We have various patents in this field and their overall scope substantiates the innovative leadership of OES in its paradigm shifting approach to assuring quality in today's challenging manufacturing processes."

The patent covers the use of a strain sensor attached to the manufacturing equipment that provides a relative indication of the forces associated with creating a part coupled with an intelligent control system that can analyze this input for repeatability and stability. The inventive arrangement provides the ability to detect and provide an alert to even minute variations in the process that can indicate production of a defective part or deterioration in the process that will eventually result in quality problems. Often these process variation issues are not discernible in post-manufacturing inspection, which is why many companies in the auto parts industry are looking for improved objective monitoring systems, such as the process variation monitoring systems from OES.

OES is an experienced leader with in-process quality monitoring technologies, having celebrated 27 years of expanding operations. OES Inc. develops and deploys many extremely effective “in-process test and monitoring” solutions for a wide range of applications, including wire crimping, tube end-forming, crimp forming, riveting, and other pressing and forming applications.
