Brescia University College, Canada’s only women’s university, launches its 100th anniversary celebrations on Sunday.
The Centennial Opening Ceremonies at the Roman Catholic affiliate of Western University begin with an afternoon mass and include the unveiling of a painting of Brescia’s Ursuline Hall done by a member of the Group of Seven.
The mass, to be led by Bishop Ronald Fabbro of the Diocese of London, will feature music from the Brescia choir and “special readings and participation” by members of the Brescia and London communities.
The Ursuline Hall painting by the Group of Seven’s A.J. Casson was commissioned in the late 1920s by the family that owned Pigott Construction, which built the hall. The Pigott family has donated the painting to the school, which calls the unveiling “a proud homecoming.”
There will also be an art exhibit during the Sunday ceremonies.
Sunday is the Feast Day of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order of nuns in Brescia, Italy, in the 16th century. The Ursuline Sisters of Chatham founded the London college in 1919. Today the college has 1,500 full and part-time students.
