London

July has been a month filled with lots of live music, and it looks like August will be no different!  July started with a huge Canada Day music celebration along Dundas Place, SunFest celebrated 30th years with a visit from Prime Minister Trudeau, Rock The Park brought thousands in and out of their gates all weekend and Home County Music & Art Festival held a record setting 46th edition of their festival. There’s loads of music events, including our free weekly Music Mondays and Thursday Tune Ups series! That’s not all, Pride London has many music-related events throughout July 18th to 28th including the upcoming Pride In The Park. This just scratches the surface of what London has to offer in the coming months. August features some major events including Ribfest & Rock's Rally. This past month saw massive announcements from Park Jam Music Festival. The new festival will offer 7 nights of programming over 10 nights. Music will feature massive artists in different genres including Rock, Country, Alternative, Throwback Artists, Hip-Hop and two days of EDM.

The weekly #ThursdayTuneUps series present by RBC Place London continues! The free outdoor event brings local food trucks, art, and live music to downtown London. Music Canada is calling for the Government of Canada to re-balance the music marketplace and restore fairness to the creators of music. The new report titled Closing the Value Gap: How to Fix Safe Harbours and Save the Creative Middle Class addresses problems harming the financial success of artists. The report builds on the previous 2017 report titled The Value Gap: Its Origins, Impacts and a Made-in-Canada Approach, which first highlighted the issue.

For those who don’t know, the Value Gap is the difference between the value of creative content and the revenues returned to the artist. In 2017 alone, the gap was $1.6 billion. A broken copyright framework that is ill-adapted to the digital age is attributed as being the cause.

What can be done to reduce the Value Gap according to Music Canada?
- Clarify safe harbours
- Address the responsibilities of user-upload services
- Eliminating the commercial radio royalty exemption and clarifying the definition of “sound recordings” in film & television
- Create a temporary fund for private copying
Click here to learn more about the issue and how it can be solved.
