HOLY ROLLER Rededication and Celebration
June 4-5, 2022 in Victoria Park The preservation of the HOLY ROLLER, the veteran tank that has stood steadfast in Victoria Park as a memorial to honour the memory of the 1st Hussars who served in World War II, is now complete and will be returned to Victoria Park. As such, a rededication celebration is taking place June 4 and 5 in Victoria Park as the 1st Hussars honour the fallen and thank the London community for its support. The weekend will feature exhibits from the RCR Museum and the 1st Hussars Museum, vintage and modern military vehicles, performances by military bands and a formal parade. Parade and Rededication Ceremony Sunday June 5, beginning at 10:25 am at Delta Armouries toward City Hall and then Victoria Park 11:00am Rededication Ceremony at Victoria Park On Sunday, June 5 the formal parade will take place, starting at 10:00 am at the Delta Armouries on Dundas St., leading to the site where the HOLY ROLLER has been placed once again in Victoria Park. Members of the community are then invited to join dignitaries for the rededication ceremony, which will include remarks and flyovers by the Rumbling Radials and Harvard Aircraft. The Preservation Project Team thanks the entire London community, Fanshawe College, General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada and many more for the support in the preservation of this incredibly essential piece of history. The HOLY ROLLER is the one of only two Canadian Sherman tanks to return to Canada in 1946 that fought from D-Day to VE Day. This year marks the 78th anniversary of the D-Day landing. The last surviving 1st Hussar veteran passed away last year, leaving only the HOLY ROLLER to stand in their place. It is one of two surviving Sherman tanks, “Bomb” of the Sherbrooke Fusiliers is the other, where is serves as a reminder of the fallen and their sacrifices in Quebec. |
