Robert Collins, the Director of Workforce Development here at the London Economic Development Corporation (LEDC) has consulted hundreds of jobseekers and employers over the years and knows the ins-and-outs of job fairs. Here’s what he has to share about the value of attending the job fair and how to succeed:

1. Personable - For both jobseekers and hiring employers, the job fair allows each party to move beyond the paper resume and digital applications and experience a personable, face-to-face conversation. Employers can get a real sense of the attitudes, behaviours, and personality of a jobseeker, while the jobseeker can make a great impression that they may not be able to capture in their resume. This discussion also opens up a platform for jobseekers to ask questions they typically couldn’t have asked while applying for the job online.

2. Persuasive -  Jobseekers, this is your chance to pitch your value to the employer and show them why they should hire you. From the moment you walk in the door, you’re in control of who you want to talk to and which opportunities you want to explore. Use this as your chance to make a powerful impression.

3. Preparedness - When a jobseeker comes prepared to a job fair, by doing things like researching companies and their positions beforehand, redoing your resume, and practicing your interviewing skills, you’ll come better equipped to discover and act on valuable opportunities. Attend with a positive attitude and an open-mind, while showing your interest in the company and why you want to work for them.

4. Profile - For employers, attending the job fair allows you to raise your company’s profile locally. Many people that attend the job fair may not have known that your company existed, or that your company is doing creative and innovative things in the community. Use this job fair as your chance to gain valuable brand recognition. Employment agencies also have the chance to highlight the resources and services they provide to jobseekers. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of the job fair and your interactions with jobseekers.

5. Pointers - Attending the job fair allows jobseekers, employers, and employment agencies to make powerful connections amongst each other. Jobseekers can walk away from the job fair with new contacts, opportunities, and resources top of mind. Be sure put these pointers into action and follow up with companies you are interested in working for, and the agencies you’d like to learn further insights from.
