$8 million in renewed funding fuels research at Western

Seven researchers at The University of Western Ontario - leaders in their field of study - have been awarded renewed Canada Research Chair funding from the Government of Canada totaling $8 million.

The Honourable Robert Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Canada, was in London today, along with London West Member of Parliament Ed Holder to announce the renewed funding. He was thanked by Western President Amit Chakma.

"These prestigious Canada Research Chairs have helped Western and southwestern Ontario attract and retain incredible research talent - men and women who are making discoveries and advancing work that will impact our country and our world," said Chakma. "We are grateful for this continuing vital investment by the Government of Canada."

The funded research delves into many diverse areas from the process of star formation, math, new models of health service delivery, intergovernmental relationships, to the use of nuclear magnetic resonance to help find better ways to treat things such as obesity and Alzheimer's. The researchers are:

Moira Stewart - Tier 1, Health
Canada Research Chair in Primary Health Care
$1,400,000

Miguel A. Valvano - Tier 1, Health
Canada Research Chair in Infectious Diseases and Microbial Pathogenesis
$1,400,000

Robert A. Young - Tier 1, Social Sciences and Humanities
Canada Research Chair in Multilevel Governance
$1,400,000

This renewed investment at Western is part of a total of $165.5 million in funding for 187 Canada Research Chairs newly awarded or renewed at 44 Canadian universities announced on March 26, 2010 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology).
