Advancing Heart Research: A Next Generation PV Loop Measurement System

Advancing Heart Research: A Next Generation PV Loop Measurement System Historically, volume measurements have been carried out using conductance technology, an approach which requires complex and error-prone calibration techniques to estimate the parallel conductance of the heart muscle. Conductance signals typically require post-processing and do not account for the time varying capacitance of the heart muscle throughout each heart beat.

Now, the ADVantage™ system introduced by Scisense Inc. uses ground breaking Admittance technology to achieve the exact ventricular blood volume measurement by addressing all the shortcomings of classical conductance technology. The system not only eliminates the need for a hypertonic saline "bolus" and blood-cuvette calibration, but also performs real-time corrections for time varying parallel conductance artifacts and provides real time feedback on the position of the catheter in the ventricle. Finally, the built in microprocessor makes all these adjustments in real time and the user-friendly digital touchpad interface guides users through the entire experimental process.

This new system is a revolutionary step forward for research in heart disease and drug evaluation, allowing more comprehensive data to be collected faster, with fewer test subjects and lower experimental error. The Scisense ADVantage™system will be available for shipment in December and will be profiled at the company's exhibit at the American Heart Scientific Sessions meeting next week in New Orleans, LA (booth #1935).

About Scisense (www.scisense.com )
Scisense specializes in micro-sensing technologies for use in medical instrumentation. Products include highly sensitive pressure sensors used to measure blood pressure, and also probes that combine the measurement of pressure and blood volume from within the ventricle. The relation of ventricular pressure to volume provides a true index for assessing myocardial contractility and compliance.

The company's head office and manufacturing facilities are located in London, Ontario Canada. Since its incorporation in 2002, Scisense has focused on contributing to the advancement of research into cardiac disease and has well established itself as a technology leader. The company has an expert staff of engineers and scientists, and an extensive network of customers throughout the world at Universities, Pharmaceutical Companies and Contract Research Organizations.
