Amazon fulfilment centre outside London set to open in early fall

An official opening date for the colossal Amazon facility just outside of London has finally been announced.

The e-commerce giant said Wednesday that the fulfilment centre located at 11884 Sunset Drive in Southwold Township will open its doors on October 1, and will employ approximately 1,000 individuals. Hiring of those workers is expected to begin in September.

"Amazon is committed to supporting the long-term economic vibrancy of Southwold Township," said Director of Regional Operations Harsh Khaitan in a media release.

Amazon Canada said most of those hired will be working on the floor of the facility packaging up and processing orders. Employees will work alongside robotics to process up to 750,000 items per day.

"By creating more than 1,000 good jobs and deploying our world-class logistics technology, we look forward to supporting this community and continuing to deliver exceptional service to our customers," said Khaitan

Southwold Township Mayor Grant Jones said the municipality is thrilled to have Amazon join the community.

"We are very much looking forward to the positive economic and social impact the opening of the Amazon fulfilment centre will bring to our area," said Jones. “The revitalization of the site offers new opportunities for our local residents and region for years to come.”

Construction of the 2-million square foot plant began in July 2021. The fulfilment centre resides on the site of the former St. Thomas Assembly auto plant, which closed in 2011.

Those interested in working at the facility should visit www.amazon.ca/canadahourlyjobs beginning September 1, 2023.
