In an effort to help international student graduates gain valuable Canadian work experience, the City of London has expanded its internship program to include annual twenty-week paid internships. These internship opportunities are intended for international students who have graduated within the last year from a recognized post-secondary institution, currently hold a valid Post Graduate Work Permit and have an English benchmark level 6 or above.
“The City of London recognizes the importance of a diverse workforce and is dedicated to removing barriers to employment where we can,” says Mayor Ed Holder. “This program will increase students’ job readiness and experience so they can enter the London job market confidently and contribute to growing our City’s economic prosperity.”
These new positions will provide participants with the opportunity to:
- be exposed to workplace culture and systems;
- build skills and knowledge through meaningful work assignments;
- engage in professional networking and obtain references;
- develop strategies to overcome potential employment barriers and
- gain 600 hours of full-time work experience.
These internship positions are an initiative of the community-led Choose London – Innovative, Vibrant and Global: London’s Newcomer Strategy in collaboration with the City of London Human Resources. Endorsed by City Council in June 2018, this Strategy focuses not only on attracting Newcomers, but retaining and integrating them into London’s labour market; this includes international student graduates.
