The clean technology sector in London is growing and is made up of several world leaders developing unique products and technologies that are improving health and quality of life across the globe.
Western University and Fanshawe College are two distinguished academic institutions making headway in the clean tech sector. Their extensive research and development projects focus on wind engineering, solar power, water and wastewater purification, energy efficient construction, energy storage and much more.
Trojan Technologies
Created in 1976, Trojan Technologies is a global force in the clean tech sector. The company has pioneered ultra violet water purification technologies for municipal water waste, industrial applications and smaller residential uses. With a workforce of over 350 highly skilled employees in London and 800 globally, Trojan’s advanced technologies are being deployed across the globe. Recently, Trojan installed some of the world’s largest water treatment systems in New York and Shanghai.
One of the fastest emerging areas in environmental technology is ballast water treatment, which serves to protect native marine life from invasive species. Trojan has recently secured major contracts with European cargo ship operators to install onboard U.V. based ballast water treatment technologies. This endeavor will result in long-term employment sustainability at Trojan in London.
London’s one of a kind Waterwaste Facility & The Southern Ontario Water Consortium (SOWC)
In addition to using ultra violet technologies in the City of London’s wastewater plants, the city has developed a unique research and development facility. In partnership with the SOWC, the Greenway Pollution Control Plant’s research centre allows companies like Trojan to develop, test, and validate new technologies using live flows that cannot be replicated in a laboratory. The SOWC is funded by FedDev Ontario and involves more than 70 companies, five municipalities and eight universities. The SOWC responds to private sector needs for access to actual water environments and leading edge research expertise to advance water-related technologies and bring them to the marketplace. Innovation is necessary to solve water challenges and the support and investments the SOWC receives will help to make London a world-class region in clean water technology.
The research and development will expedite the time it would take to get new clean water and waste technologies to the market, not only assisting in job retention but will foster growth opportunities in the future. Equally exciting is the centre’s capacity to attract international companies. Globally, water research is hindered by the lack of ability to test on the large scale, and London’s research centre is a key resource in solving the problem. Amongst this clean initiative are many other innovative companies that strive to make London a clean hub, including Purifics ES Inc., Samsung Renewable Energy Inc., and Canadian Solar.
