(December 8, 2008) London Hydro, in collaboration with The University of Western Ontario and the Mayor’s Sustainable Energy Council (MSEC), is furthering local investment in research and development of alternative energy projects.
Building on a growing community partnership to ensure London as a leader in the area of sustainable energy, the utility is investing $50,000 in technology and research at Western’s first LEED (leadership in energy & environmental design) certified Green Building, the Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion and $30,000 in MSEC’s Sustainable Energy Lecture Series and other innovative energy projects.
Believing this investment in human resources will help yield many exciting career opportunities in the alternative energy field, London Hydro is proud to provide its support to meet the needs of future generations.
“As with other successful partnerships with the University and the City, we’re proud to participate in Western’s Green Building Initiative and MSEC’s educational programming,” says London Hydro Chair Peter Johnson. “By way of our support, we’re investing in today’s research and development of alternative energy, as well as tomorrow’s cultivation of the much-needed talent and skills of future leaders in the electricity field.”
“Clean energy and reduced pollution will be a major focus and the goal at Western’s Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion,” says Western President Paul Davenport. “The investment announced today and our partnership with London Hydro and the City of London will ensure that research and education in these areas remain priorities at Western, and will allow us to provide highly skilled and educated individuals to the power generation industry.”
“MSEC is very grateful to London Hydro for its support of our projects aimed at promoting sustainable use of energy through a series of public lectures and demonstration projects,” says Council Chair Dr. Mohan Mathur. “We value London Hydro’s collaboration with MSEC and with Western.”
The Mayor’s Sustainable Energy Council was officially established in October 2007 with a mandate to promote, encourage and support the development and implementation of practical research and initiatives, technologies and investment in the area of sustainable energy.
Working with industry leaders representing research, education, production and distribution of energy, Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best is encouraged by MSEC’s action plan. “We’re championing a number of new projects to educate the public and promote development of new products and services, and this collaborative London Hydro investment will ensure the Council’s ongoing success.”
