Fanshawe College Student and Staff Member Win National Awards

(London, Ontario) Fanshawe College is proud to announce that Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Accelerated) student Vaughan Scriver and Student Information Systems Designate Marilyn Robinson have been recognized with prestigious awards from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC).

Vaughan was recognized with a gold level designation in the ACCC’s Student Leadership Award of Excellence, while Marilyn earned bronze in the Staff Award of Excellence category. Both received their awards at the World Congress 2012 event of the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics, hosted by ACCC in Halifax from May 26 to 29.

“I want to congratulate all of Fanshawe’s ACCC nominees, including Vaughan and Marilyn, for their success,” said Fanshawe College President Howard Rundle. “It is always exciting when Fanshawe’s people are recognized for their excellence as students and employees. Both Vaughan and Marilyn have made great contributions to the College and we are very proud of them.”

Vaughan Scriver came to Fanshawe in the fall of 2009 after a 30-year absence from the classroom. Despite the challenges, Vaughan took full advantage of his opportunity to start over. As a former marine mechanic with the Canadian Navy, he used his passion for engineering to complete three Fanshawe College programs: Pre-Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technician (Accelerated) and Mechanical Engineering Technology (Accelerated).

Vaughan also contributed enormously to student life and politics. He provided leadership to Fanshawe’s Adult Learners Group and Adult Social Club. He was also elected class representative to the Fanshawe Student Union in each of his three years at the College. In 2011, he was elected student representative on the Fanshawe College Board of Governors.

Vaughan has won several awards for academics and leadership at Fanshawe, including the Fanshawe College Complete Student Award in 2011. At June convocation, he will be presented with the Fanshawe College Distinguished Student Award in the category of technology.

Marilyn Robinson graduated from Fanshawe’s Medical Secretary program and shortly after she began her career at the College, working in Central Word Processing. This position was the first of many administrative positions of increasing responsibility she would hold over the next 29 years. As Student Information Systems Designate in the School of Human Services, she is the ultimate administrative problem solver for students, faculty, and staff. As a self-professed “people person,” she loves helping her “customers” meet their administrative requirements as efficiently as possible.

In 2007, Marilyn served as the College’s sponsored employee with the United Way of London & Middlesex. She worked full-time for the organization for a four-month period, helping the United Way reach a record fundraising total that year. In 2008 and 2009, she co-chaired Fanshawe’s annual United Way campaign. Marilyn has also been the driving force behind fundraisers for the Children’s Aid Society Christmas Fund at Fanshawe for the past 10 years.

Marilyn’s contributions to Fanshawe were recognized with the 2011 Fanshawe College President’s Distinguished Staff Award.

The ACCC Awards of Excellence recognize and promote excellence in Canadian colleges and institutes. The awards showcase extraordinary contributions of individuals and programs to their institutions and highlight the role colleges play in social, economic, and cultural development.
