Green Energy Solutions Steaming in London
London, ON: London District Energy, a Division of Fort Chicago Power recently put its newly expanded steam distribution line into commercial operation.
Investing in the multi-million dollar project, London District Energy (LDE) expanded its steam distribution line by adding a new 3km leg to serve St. Joseph's Health Care, London. The new supply line provides a new source of steam supply to St. Joseph's Hospital and Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care allowing St. Joseph's to turn off its aging boiler plant, lowering the life cycle cost of energy for the hospital system and reducing emissions as a result of the increased efficiency from the London District Energy solution.
"London District Energy has been providing environmental and efficient energy services in London for over 120 years. Through this steam line expansion we look forward to providing London companies with cost-savings and emission reduction opportunities," says Paul Eastman, VP Eastern Canada Development for Fort Chicago Energy.
"Expansion of the steam line demonstrates a significant investment in infrastructure that promotes the use of green energy alternatives in London," boasts Peter White, President and CEO of the London Economic Development Corporation "These options make our city competitive globally as we continue to attract international investment."
Founded to serve university, hospital and government facilities in the 1880's, LDE continues to provide sustainable energy solutions to London's hospital services. "The many hours dedicated to this project by both St. Joseph's and London District Energy in designing our custom energy solution is a testament to the collaborative nature in building sustainable energy solutions," says Bruno Labate, Director of Physical Plant for St. Joseph's. "It's now full steam ahead."
Other major LDE customers include London Health Sciences Centre, London Hospital Linen Services, City Centre, The London Free Press, Citi Plaza, City Hall and the London Convention Centre.
The new line is now open for commercial operation and is also available to serve new and existing businesses along the route. With distribution throughout London's downtown core, LDE has a total thermal generating capacity of about 100MW, producing approximately 245,000lbs/hour of steam and 4,200 tons of chilled water. As a community based energy system, LDE generates steam, chilled water, and electricity from a combined cogeneration and convention boiler system.
