International expert examines the corporate costs of domestic violence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WESTERN UNIVERSITY
October 2, 2018

An internationally renowned expert who specializes in the business costs of domestic violence will deliver two talks locally on Wednesday, October 3.

Aristides Vara-Horna is the Director of the Research Institute in Business Sciences at the University of San Martín de Porres in Lima, Peru and an international consultant on the costs of gender violence for Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, a German development agency.

Vara-Horna is most famously known for developing a research methodology to measure the corporate costs of domestic violence to medium and large-sized enterprises.

Faculty and staff at Western University’s Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children – co-sponsors of the two public speaking events – have taken the preliminary steps necessary to have Western serve as the pilot project for the first Canadian adaptation of Vara-Horna’s methodology.

Vara-Horna will deliver a lecture to the Western campus community at 3 p.m. in Conron Hall (University College Rm. 3110) and will also present a community talk at 6:30 p.m. at Changing Ways (825 Bradley Ave), a local agency that helps men to stop their abusive behaviour in their relationships, and challenges them to take an active role in preventing woman abuse.

Having measured the business costs of violence against women in more than 400 large and medium-sized companies in Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru, Vara-Horna has convincingly demonstrated the high economic impact of violence against women on productivity. His methodology has already been replicated successfully in Ghana, South Sudan and Pakistan by the What Works to Prevent Violence Program (UKAid).

Vara-Horna’s week-long appointment as a Visiting Scholar to Western, which also includes webinars for government officials and the general public, is co-sponsored by the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children, Western’s Department of Economics, the Faculty of Arts & Humanities and the Faculty of Education.
