LONDON, ON, October 4, 2004 – JMP Engineering today announced it has received a $1.3 million order from one of the world’s largest automotive exhaust system manufacturers to provide a complete flexible manufacturing cell as part of a cutting edge means of manufacturing in today’s highly competitive automotive industry.
In the past, manufacturers have used special purpose equipment to perform various machining operations on the parts they produce. However, with automotive demands being generally lower and more volatile and with more offshore pressure, such dedicated equipment can be very risky and cost prohibitive, especially for North American auto parts manufacturers.
In response, JMP has designed a flexible manufacturing system that is scaleable with demand and re-configurable for future applications. “We have engineered a manufacturing solution that allows our customers to purchase new equipment in modules and therefore increase production capacity as increased capacity is required,” said Scott Shawyer, JMP President and Chief Executive Officer. “Not only is our solution scaleable, it also has the ability to process multiple part types simultaneously and its flexibility allows it to very easily accommodate new part types in the future.”
This flexible manufacturing cell, which is aimed to lower the overall cost of machining operations, employs a combination of programmable logic controllers, machine vision systems, industrial robots, CNC (computer numeric control) machines, and flexible tooling to perform various machining and washing operations on various automotive parts.
