Leading game development studio receives Featured Company of London Award

London ON - (January 15, 2007) Digital Extremes, one of the world's leading development studios in the interactive entertainment industry has been named the most recent recipient of the Featured Company of London Award by the London Economic Development Corporation (LEDC).

"Digital Extremes is honored by the recognition of the LEDC. Working in a talent-focused industry, Digital Extremes strives to offer its employees an inspiring creative-friendly environment, both inside and outside the office and the City of London plays a big part in that philosophy, " says company founder and president James Schmalz, "As our industry has matured, the many offerings from the city, such as recreation, schools, cost of living, have become even bigger factors in helping us attract top-notch Canadian talent to the area that would normally have gone to the U.S. Not a small feat to achieve."

Founded in 1993, Digital Extremes got its foothold in the industry through the shareware craze during the early 90's with the game, Epic Pinball. Epic Pinball was one of the most successful shareware games ever made, trailing only behind such industry greats as Duke3D, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. A sequel soon followed - Extreme Pinball - and together they helped fund the creation of what would become one of the industry's blockbuster franchises, Epic Games’ Unreal®.

Headquartered in London, Digital Extremes partnered with Epic Games and co-created Unreal and its counterpart Unreal Tournament. Both games set a new standard for first-person action games. Rich graphics, fine-tuned gameplay, frenetic action and high quality production value are descriptions that have become synonymous with any Unreal branded game. To date, the scope of games in the award-winning Unreal franchise, including Unreal, Unreal Tournament and Unreal Championship have sold more than 10 million units worldwide. The latest iteration, Unreal Tournament 2004 shipped to stores in March 2004.

Digital Extremes is currently developing its newest intellectual property, the next-generation third-person action game, Dark Sector™ scheduled for release in 2007.

Company president James Schmalz and Chief Financial Officer, Michael Schmalz will receive a commemorative plaque from Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco Best at the city council meeting on January 22. Together with the City of London, the LEDC announces a featured company each month.
