London Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 150 Years of the Voice of Business
London, ON - 2007 marks the 150th anniversary of the London Chamber of Commerce.
“We are privileged to have served London’s business community for the last century and a half,” says Gerry Macartney, CEO of the London Chamber of Commerce. “We believe that London’s reputation as a centre for entrepreneurial excellence and business leadership is due in no small measure to the significant initiatives, programs and policies that stem from the work being done by members and volunteers on the Chamber’s many committees and taskforces.”
The Chamber’s origins date back to 1857 when over 40 community leaders met to form the London Board of Trade. Their purpose was to create an organization to protect the interests of merchants, traders and other businesses and to promote the advancement of London. 150 years and a name change later, this volunteer-driven, not-for-profit membership based organization has grown to serve as the Voice of Business committed to the enhancement of economic prosperity representing all industry sectors in London and area.
“I can tell you with absolute certainty that the London Chamber of Commerce is one of the most highly respected and highly praised Chambers in the country, ” says Pam Waeland, 2006/07 President of the Chamber Board of Directors and Business Development Manager, Government Markets and Public Affairs for 3M Canada. “I salute the thousands of volunteers and staff who have helped us reach this pinnacle and I am confident that the Chamber is well positioned to enjoy another 150 years of outstanding success.”
The Chamber takes a progressive leadership stance on critical civic matters that affect the economic environment and quality of life in London and advocates on business priorities to all levels of government. In addition to providing cost saving membership benefits, the London Chamber of Commerce also hosts numerous events providing a forum for public issues and valuable networking opportunities.
The Chamber thanks business leaders for their support over the past 150 years, and looks forward to continuing its community service over many decades to come. The Chamber will be celebrating this milestone over the course of the 2007 year. The London Chamber of Commerce has approximately 1,800 individual members representing over 900 businesses.
