London, Ontario, Canada (May 10th, 2011) – Purifics ES Inc., (“Purifics”) is pleased to announce that it has installed and successfully commissioned a PHOTO-CAT® system to clean up groundwater contaminated with 1,4-dioxane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the W.R. Grace Superfund Site (the “Site”) in Concord, Massachusetts.
The Site is a former chemical manufacturing facility. Over the years, effluent wastes from the manufacturing process were disposed of into several unlined lagoons contaminating the soil and groundwater. The current focus of remediation efforts is on cleaning the contaminated groundwater.
Considered innovative technology by some in the remediation industry, the PHOTO-CAT systems have been successfully employed on Superfund sites since 1994. The PHOTO-CAT system replaces an air stripper that was ineffective at removing 1,4-dioxane, and is the end-of-pipe solution for both VOCs and 1,4-dioxane.
David Fuerst of O&M, Inc., project manager for the site, said “the PHOTO-CAT system is extremely well built and easy to operate. The on-site technician learned how to operate the system within minutes.”
PHOTO-CAT is a photocatalytic, ceramic membrane process that combines the best of chemical-free advanced oxidation processes (AOP+®) and high flux ceramic ultrafiltration. The advantages of Purifics’ PHOTO-CAT system are that it is chemical free (no peroxide or ozone), fully automated (no operator required) and will treat contaminants of concern to levels below the detection limit. Another advantage is that there are no air emissions, eliminating the need for air permits.
Purifics first announced that it had won the contract at the Grace superfund site in September 2010. The system was installed and began operation on schedule.
