London International Airport launches major expansion

(London - May 5, 2010)

London International Airport announced today an investment of $ 6.5 million to expand the air terminal building and provide enhanced passenger services and facilities.

The last major expansion of the terminal building was completed in 2004 and since then a number of significant new passenger services have been added:

  • West Jet Airlines which operate direct jet service to Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Orlando.
  • Air Canada that operate direct jet service to Calgary
  • United Airlines that operate direct jet service to Chicago
  • An upgrade to all jet service by Delta Airlines that operates to Detroit
  • Increase of Air Canada Jazz service to Ottawa and Toronto with 14 flights per day.
  • Seasonal jet service to Montego Bay Jamaica, Cancun Mexico and Cuba.

Passenger volumes have increased by 58% since 2004 and several smaller expansions have occurred to provide enhanced passenger services. This new expansion will provide additional seating for 500 customers and four jet bridges to connect passengers to the majority of aircraft services.

"This increased area will provide enhanced passenger seating, direct access to the aircraft in all weather conditions, improved access for travelers with mobility needs, new retail services in Duty Free products and Food and Beverage services at the gate areas." said Steve Baker President and CEO.

Since airport transfer to local control in 1998 the not for profit airport authority will has invested almost $60 million dollars in capital facilities.

The Greater London International Airport Authority is a not for profit Federal Authority which invests all income to the airport facilities. London International Airport is South Western Ontario's principal airport. It provides passengers with direct access to markets across the country, the United States and links to the world and is the only airport in South Western Ontario to offer convenient non-stop US flights.

The airport is home to 50 businesses, employs 1700 staff and contributes over $357 million annually in economic activity.

"This strategic investment will continue the advancement of London and Southwestern Ontario as a major international transportation centre and create a legacy of sustainable new employment with a connected region for new business" said Steve Baker, President & CEO, London International Airport.
