New Ontario Data Centre to Help Researchers

London ON - The Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic and Medix Technologies Inc. today announced an agreement to establish a new data centre which will provide researchers with the ability to collect and share health information data in compliance with both the provincial Personal Health Information Privacy Act and the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. Led by the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, the Data Centre will operate as a not for profit organization with daily operations and services managed by Medix Technologies. Working closely with the Privacy/Ethics Review Board, the new Data Centre will support scientists and researchers to store, manage and preserve their data to ensure their enhancement and their continuing long-term use. The aim of the Centre is to provide a national focus for research and to promote expertise and good practice, both provincial and national, for the management of access to personal health information. Scientists and researchers across Canada generate increasingly large amounts of data that needs to be shared among colleagues and peer organizations while maintaining data ownership, security and most importantly patient’s privacy. Dr. Peter Fowler, Medical Director of the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic at The University Of Western Ontario, said: \"I am delighted that the Clinic has the opportunity to make a leading contribution to the critical task of ensuring the long-term preservation and sharing of information and knowledge. This initiative brings together a unique range of expertise in the field.\" Dr. Robert Litchfield, Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic and Chair of the Privacy/Ethics Review Board of the Data Centre, said:\“A strong research base is essential for education and excellent patient care. The Data Centre will provide a much-needed focus for the management and use of research data in Ontario and North America, ensuring that our research community is given the very best advice and support.\” About Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic was founded in 1974 and provides specialized sport medicine care for active people from youth to seniors, from elite athletes to armchair quarterbacks.
