PS O’Toole & PS Truppe Announce Funding to the Canadian Bureau for International Education to Help the Education Sector Achieve Success in Markets Abroad

July 15th 2014 - London, Ontario – Erin O’Toole, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade, and Susan Truppe, Member of Parliament for London North Centre and Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women, today announced that the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) will receive up to $149,474 to help the education sector achieve success in markets abroad.

The contribution is from the Government of Canada’s Global Opportunities for Associations (GOA) program. In all, GOA is contributing up to $3 million this year to 38 industry associations across Canada to create new opportunities for Canadian companies in markets around the world.

The 38 associations will undertake 112 separate projects in support of Canada’s engagement in global trade. The vast majority, 95 percent, are aimed at countries designated as priorities for Canada under the Global Markets Action Plan (GMAP) and 90 percent are in GMAP priority sectors.

CBIE is Canada’s national organization dedicated to making Canada a global leader in international education by mobilizing expertise, knowledge, opportunity and leadership. CBIE’s pan-Canadian membership comprises 150 colleges, institutes, universities, school boards and language schools which enrol over 1.2 million students from coast to coast.

Some of the activities this funding will help the CBIE, include Ukrainian Higher Education Networking Missions to Canada, with a focus on agriculture and healthcare sectors. New market exploration in strategic countries in the Magreb and Latin America, and supporting Libya’s Transition through Cooperation in Higher Education and Capacity Building.

As an example of knowledge-sharing, CBIE, along with its partners in the Canadian Consortium for International Education (CCIE), has also agreed to host a member of Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS). Having a trade commissioner work inside an association is beneficial to both the private and public sectors. The association and its members benefit by having a better understanding of the government tools that are available to assist them. The public sector benefits by obtaining a better understanding of the private sector’s needs. There are currently 25 trade commissioners embedded in organizations across the country.

GOA delivers assistance across a wide range of sectors of the Canadian economy, including education, financial services, aerospace, infrastructure, and information and communications technologies. GOA provides matching funding of up to 50 percent of eligible expenses to support national associations for the benefit of an entire industry. The maximum annual GOA contribution is $150,000.
