Guelph, ON October 29, 2013 First time entrants, Sikorski Sausages took away an impressive six awards in the Ontario Finest Meat Competition.
Half of the six reached the highest score in their categories and were awarded Platinum Wood Smoked Bacon, Swojska, and Grandpa Ham. Gold went to Lachschinken and Montreal Smoked Beef with a Silver award for Hungarian Sausage.
The 2013 Ontario Finest Meat Competition, hosted by the Ontario Independent Meat Processors, attracted 145 entries from 16 Ontario processors. On September 18 and 19, 2013, a stellar roster of knowledgeable, influential judges including retail buyers, media, chefs, bloggers and a home economist determined the award winners in each of 13 categories. Winners for Platinum, Gold, and Silver were announced at a gala event held in Toronto, Ontario, Saturday October 26. Judging criteria was based on flavour, aroma, texture, uniqueness and visual appearance, and the top three entries from each category were selected based on the judges’ combined scores.
About the Ontario Finest Meat Competition
In 1987 the Ontario Independent Meat Processors (OIMP) launched its first meat competition with four categories and a handful of entries competing for peer recognition and bragging rights. The competition moved from an annual to a biennial competition in 2003 and now, in 2013, it is the largest of its kind in Canada with 13 categories that embrace both modern trends and the enduring heritage of Ontario’s artisanal meat and poultry products.
