Understanding CUSMA compliance | What Canadian exporters need to know

Canadian exporters can still access duty-free treatment for most goods entering the U.S. under the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), despite tariffs imposed under the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). To qualify, goods must meet CUSMA rules of origin and be certified by the exporter or producer, with the U.S. importer claiming the preferential tariff. Exporters should determine their product’s HS code, confirm compliance with origin rules, complete a certification of origin, and consider consulting customs brokers or requesting advance rulings for clarity.

Support and resources are available through government services to help businesses navigate U.S. tariffs and ensure compliance.
