Western Business Law Clinic offers legal assistance to London entrepreneurs The Western Business Law Clinic (WBLC), which began operation in September 2004, is designed to help small businesses and entrepreneurs maneuver through government documents and protocols, comprehend complex legal forms and draft legal documents. Overseen by local business lawyers, the clinic provides legal services to small start-up and early stage businesses at a minimal cost. Assistance is provided on a wide range of business matters including finance, intellectual property protection, product liability, business structure, employment law, government regulations, contracts, taxation, exporting, licensing technology and environmental issues. The WBLC is staffed by Western Law students who have a genuine interest in the community. They volunteer their limited time to stimulate private sector growth and work with trained lawyers to provide the services offered by the Clinic. Members of the local legal community are active participants in the Clinic’s operation. They dedicate pro bono hours to assist in analyzing legal issues and directing student research activities. The Clinic’s Director is Richard H. McLaren, a Professor of Law at Western. He has extensive practical experience as a commercial lawyer and is Counsel to a law firm in London. In addition, he is a labour, commercial and sports arbitrator and mediator. By connecting aspiring London entrepreneurs with some of Canada’s brightest law students, the WBLC works to motivate small businesses by providing them with high quality economic development strategies.
